Restoring the nervous system A steady quality of mind will alter the postures.  The Yoga sutras mention that Yoga is foremost a steadying or calming of the mind.  By creating a proper space for practice through meditation and practicing breath awareness techniques we can alter our experience of each asana to open areas where prana struggles to flow freely.  This more restorative practice ends with pranayama.
